What alveoflow® measures.

Three complementary views of respiratory mechanics during normal breathing.

Resistance (R)The opposition to airflow in the airways.

Reactance (X)The elastic and inertial properties of the lungs.

What is forced oscillometry (FOT)?

A non-invasive test that applies gentle pressure oscillations while the patient breathes normally, and measures how the respiratory system responds. It reports resistance and reactance across a range of frequencies, without a forced manoeuvre. How it works →

How long does a test take?

The measurement runs in well under a minute of quiet breathing, and the full workflow — patient seated, filter fitted, measurement captured, report generated — completes in under 90 seconds. There is no rest-and-repeat cycle between efforts, because there is no effort.

What patient preparation is required?

A nose clip and a single-use bacterial/viral filter. The patient sits upright, supports their cheeks, and breathes normally through the mouthpiece. No coaching of a manoeuvre is needed.

What does the report include?

Resistance and reactance across the frequency range — R5, R20, R5−R20, X5, AX and Fres — with pre- and post-bronchodilator comparison and the intra-breath traces. Reports export as PDF and CSV. Reading a report →

More about alveoflow®

alveoflow® Digital FOT System

Oscillometry complements spirometry; it does not replace it. Where both are indicated, the alveoflow® runs the pair in one sitting, which is the reason for putting them on one platform

Coaching, repeat attempts, acceptability and repeatability criteria

Difficult in young children, frail or elderly patients, and anyone breathless at rest

Effort artefact is a common cause of an uninterpretable test

Patient breathes quietly through the mouthpiece for 15–30 seconds

No coaching, no maximal effort, no learned technique

Viable where spirometry is not, including serial testing in the same visit

Resolves resistance separately at low and high frequency

Pediatric lung function testing

Small airway disease detection

Why Choose alveoflow® FOT?

Enables early detection of airway abnormalities

Suitable for patients unable to perform spirometry

Provides comprehensive respiratory mechanics analysis

Improves workflow efficiency in pulmonary testing

Devices, accessories and consumables for alveoflow® — forced oscillometry and spirometry.

alveoflow® combines forced oscillometry (FOT) and spirometry in a single unit. Oscillometry measures respiratory resistance and reactance during quiet tidal breathing, so it works with patients who cannot perform a reliable forced manoeuvre — young children, the elderly, and anyone acutely breathless.

Reported parameters follow ERS 2020 technical standards: R5, R20, R5−R20, AX, Fres and coherence, alongside conventional spirometry indices from the same session.
